The winged hero of this interactive tabletop display overcomes adversity and manages to get to the flower and collect the pollen.

The Bug Food exhibit at the Kidspace children's museum in Pasadena comprises a plasma screen in vertical orientation that is connected via a computer to a camera mounted on the other side of the wall on which the screen is mounted. This allows for the monitor to act as if it is a window in the wall - in the case of this exhibit an order window, where insects appear superimposed over the live background video to ask for their food as visitors walk up to the "server" side of the window. As the insects appear, they ask for their food, and while they are waiting they start to get agitated. Kids find the food that they think is appropriate by looking on a faux food warmer on the side of the window, and place the appropriate plate, bowl or dish underneath the order window. The computer now detects an RFID sensor that is mounted in the bottom of the plate using a sensor built in below the surface, and the insect now disappears with a happy (or sometimes even grumpy) "thank you", or bemoans the fact that they have been given the wrong food loudly before moving away from the window.

The characters implemented for this interactive were developed at Mad Systems, and produced in house. The technology used for this exhibit includes infra-red sensors as well as Radio Frequency ID equipment that uniquely identifies each of the plates containing faux bug food.
