Solar Spectroscope, Griffith Observatory
Los Angeles, California

The solar spectroscope is a device that needs to emulate an old-fashioned device that allows for the investigation of a piece of film. We decided to use our trusted "MovieViewer" system, and customized it for this need. The jogwheel was designed and built in house at Mad Systems to a very high standard. We started with solid bronze, and machine a knob that runs on a thrust bearing so that movement is smooth and the unit feels solid. The shape of the unit was defined by the available space, so the encoder is mounted directly to the wheel, but in such a way as to ensure that any force applied to the wheel is transferred into the body of the jogwheel, and not into the encoder.
